Even shorter URLs! - Posted By frufru (frufru) on 17th Jan 09 at 2:21pm
Good news for those of you wanting to add randomizers to your sig but have limited sig space!
With the recent purchase of the short domain "r-i.ca" (which is supposed to stand for random-image, though apparently it has many other uses...) we can now provide URLs smaller than many short URL services can! This has immediate benefits for the randomizer service. A new base URL has been created under the subdomain "u.r-i.ca", which means that, if you wish, you can use that for your randomizer service. So basically if you had this set as your sig in the past:
http://a.random-image.net/frufru/randimage.jpg
You can change it to to this:
http://u.r-i.ca/frufru/randimage.jpg
Note that if you had a linking sig and change the image, you must change the linking URL as well, i.e.
http://u.r-i.ca/u.asp?[the number]
As well as this, I would like provide another offer for active ProBoards Support and Virtual Forums Support users. I am giving away even shorter URLs as redirects, directly under http://r-i.ca (without the subdomain), meaning you can get http://r-i.ca/something, where the something is a sequence of alphanumeric characters and a limited number of other characters. Similarly you can also get http://r-i.ca/something.jpg to point to an image (if you are using it in a forum service signature with file extension restrictions).
There are restrictions however:
-You must have at least 1000 posts on ProBoards support, OR 100 posts on Virtual Forums support.
-There is a limit of 5 such URLs per account.
-A particular URL may be modified or removed at most once every 14 days.
-URLs are on a first-come, first serve basis, so claim yours quickly!
That's all
I will be taking such requests via PM:
Virtual Forums support
ProBoards support
Please send the short URL you prefer, and the web page/image to redirect to
Note that it may take up to 24 hours for your request to get processed
